Do Biblical Stories Have a Place in Public School Curriculum?

The Texas legislature has recently moved to put biblical stories into public school curriculums. I usually try to avoid politics, but they have stepped into my area. I do think there is a general lack of biblical knowledge, but I don’t think the school is the solution.

The teachers are trained to teach reading, writing, and math, but they are not trained to teach Bible. The Bible is a complicated book. Even stories that seem simple have important cultural contexts that are not simple. If parents want more Bible, I have a simple solution, bring your children to church. Pastors and Bible teachers have years of experience. We will be glad to help.

I filled a pulpit in The United Kingdom several years ago where they had Bible class every day and worship every week. There was very little church attendance, especially among children on Sundays. Bible classes in school did not help. It hurt church participation. It is a pastor's job to nurture faith, not the public school.
